Hydrogen Storage:

Hydrogen storage is a crucial and technically challenging step to providing a ready supply of hydrogen fuel for end use and is a problem that remains unresolved after decades of exploration. The current approaches of hydrogen storage include:

  • Gaseous and liquid hydrogen storage via compression or liquefaction under cryogenic conditions.

  • Chemical storage in irreversible hydrogen carriers.

  • Reversible metal and chemical hydrides.

  • Gas-on-solid adsorption.

Our researchers are focused on understanding the fundamental physical chemistry for hydrogen physical adsorption onto porous carbon materials, the electrochemical proton insertion into carbon inter-layers, and metal hydrides with high hydrogen capacity, e.g. AlH3.
